Job Description:
Cyber Security Specialist


Hybrid – 3 days a week including Wednesday

Glen Allen, Virginia 

Monitor systems for security gaps, implement effective cyber security solutions, and provide pertinent data to the Information Technology Security team. This individual conducts risk assessments, tests data processing systems and assists with the development of sophisticated cyber threat management capability. The Cyber Security Specialist provides agility and capability in identifying, detecting, protecting, and responding to cyber threats and predicting threats; recommends solutions for the Security Team; verifies problem resolution and maintains records of work performed. This individual is responsible for effectively and timely responding to issues with computer security vulnerabilities, phishing, malware, and forensic investigations and serves as subject matter expert (SME) specializing in host and network-based detection and prevention suites.

Responsibilities include:

  • Cyber security management Manage security solutions that may include firewall intrusion prevention systems, endpoint detection and response solutions, vulnerability management tools, and log correlation tools.
  • Evaluate vulnerabilities and threats to identify solutions to mitigate risks.
  • Examine project designs and specifications to ensure adherence to cybersecurity standards Use computer forensics tools to reconstruct cyber event activities to prevent future occurrences.
  • Conduct threat intelligence gathering to stay abreast of applicable cyber threats.
  • Guide security team with cyber-related initiatives.
  • Infrastructure Support Develop strategies for enterprise infrastructure and incorporate strategies into design and implementation of infrastructure architecture, including hardware, system software, network, and security.
  • Manage security-related software.
  • Business Continuity Participate in disaster recovery planning, implementation, and testing to confirm appropriate system recovery capabilities for supported applications.
  • Vendor Relationships Negotiate contracts (initial purchase, maintenance renewal, consulting service agreement) with hardware and software vendors and consulting service providers.
  • Participate in and contribute to IT department meetings.

Work Experience Required:

  • 5 years minimum technical lead on host and network-based detection and prevention suites (firewall intrusion prevention systems, endpoint detection and response solutions)
  • 5 years minimum experience in cyber security
  • 5 years minimum cyber incident detection and response procedures
  • 5 years minimum cyber policy and framework implementation (e.g., CIS Top 18, NIST CSF, etc.)
  • 5 years minimum Microsoft Windows Architecture (Active Directory, Group Policy, etc.)
  • 5 years minimum system implementation and baseline configuration management
  • 5 years minimum professional experience in IT security risk, threat, and vulnerability management Critical

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ability to effectively and professionally interact with various people and personalities Preferred

Utilities industry, especially generation, transmission, and distribution, preferred.


Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems or equivalent experience
