Job Description:
Assistant Editor – Catholic publication

Direct Hire, Hybrid work environment

Richmond, VA

Techead has partnered with a local, faith-based nonprofit to help them hire an Assistant Editor for their biweekly print publication and digital content.

Responsibilities:

  • Works with the editor to develop and prepare written and digital pieces for publication.
  • Writes and edits content for a print and digital website, having a sharp eye for proofing local and news service copy.
  • Contributes original content to print and digital platforms, editing material to include, but not limited to, photo cutlines, feature and news stories, sidebars, special projects, etc.
  • Covers and writes stories assigned by the Editor as needed.
  • Assists in selecting photos and art to accompany print and digital articles.
  • Collaborates with the Editor and Creative Director in designing layouts for the print publication and when necessary the digital website.
  • Offers story ideas and contributes to the editorial and long-term planning.
  • Prepares written materials and edits as needed for the Communications Director.
  • Supports the Communications Office in proofreading written materials.
  • Assists with photography as requested.
Requirements:
  • Three or more years of related experience in the print or communications industry
  • Strong understanding of digital journalism best practices and the ability to keep abreast of emerging trends.
  • Strong oral and written communication, detail orientation, planning and organizing skills, time management abilities, collaboration skills,  project management skills, and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Proficient using Microsoft Office and AP Stylebook Proficiency in Adobe software (InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat Professional) and Catholic News Service Stylebook is desired.
  • A practicing Catholic with working knowledge of Church structure and Catholic Church teaching is required.
  • Work samples required.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in English/Journalism/Mass Communications or related field
