Job Description:
Mechanical Engineer, Facilities Management Design & Construction
The Mechanical Engineer is a key member of the Facilities Management Design & Construction Team. This position is responsible for providing expert mechanical design, engineering analysis, project management, and conducting facilities inspections and condition assessments across the University campus.
Key Responsibilities

Mechanical Design & Analysis: Develop mechanical designs for minor renovations and HVAC projects, including power and control systems. This involves performing engineering calculations, conducting comprehensive code analysis, and preparing detailed sketches, drawings, and specifications.

Project Management: Manage assigned design and construction projects from initial concept through final completion, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to specification.

Inspections & Assessments: Assist the team by performing detailed facilities inspections and mechanical condition assessments to inform future planning and maintenance.
Education & Experience
-
Education: A Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in mechanical engineering, mechanical engineering technology, or a closely related discipline from an ABET-accredited institution is required.

Experience: Extensive experience in the design of mechanical systems and/or construction project management.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
-
Technical Standards: Thorough understanding of industry design criteria, including ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning), NEC (National Electrical Code), and other relevant engineering standards and building codes.

Design Proficiency: Demonstrated ability to prepare comprehensive mechanical designs, including engineering calculations and the preparation of plans and specifications.

CAD/BIM Software: Proficiency in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software, specifically AutoCAD and/or Revit.

Project Management: Proven ability to effectively manage numerous construction projects simultaneously.

Communication & Collaboration: Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with all University stakeholders, including designers, engineers, contractors, shop mechanics, and electricians.

Software Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, with the ability to maintain necessary databases.
Licenses & Certifications

Professional Licensure: Licensed in Virginia as a Professional Engineer (PE), OR licensed in another state with the ability to obtain Virginia licensure within 12 months of employment, OR certification as a Project Management Professional (PMP).

Driving: A valid driver’s license and insurable driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Advanced Degree: Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, construction management, or a related discipline.

Additional Certification: Both Professional Engineer (PE) registration and Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.

Complex Projects: Experience managing complex design and construction projects.

Scheduling Software: Experience with scheduling software such as Primavera or MS Project.

Project Management Systems: Experience with web-based project management software such as eBuilder, PCS, or CoConstruct.

Safety Training: Completion of a 40-Hour OSHA Training Course.

Code Interaction: Experience interacting with code officials in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Industry Experience: Experience working in a Higher Education environment.
