Job Description:

We are seeking a senior Unified Communications (UC) Engineer to join a dynamic technical team.. In this role, you will design, implement, and manage secure enterprise voice solutions that strictly align with Air Force (AF) enterprise standards and UC policies. The ideal candidate brings extensive hands-on experience optimizing converged Gigabit Ethernet networks and maintaining critical voice infrastructure within a secure military environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architecture & Engineering: Design, install, configure, and upgrade enterprise telephony solutions to increase network flexibility and performance in accordance with AF UC standards.

  • Operations & Maintenance: Operate and maintain all voice equipment, firmware, and software to ensure maximum system availability, reliability, and security.

  • Capacity & Performance Planning: Lead voice environment planning for internal customers; develop and review technical procedures relating to capacity, performance tuning, and lifecycle upgrades.

  • Network Analysis & Troubleshooting: Utilize packet capture, protocol analysis, and debugging tools to resolve complex, distributed technical issues across internal, service provider, and external networks.

  • Stakeholder & Vendor Liaison: Interface with distributed Voice Responsible Officers, conduct capacity planning meetings, survey communication rooms/telephony backboards, and maintain highly detailed voice line cut-sheets. Evaluate and recommend vendor hardware/software solutions based on customer requirements.

  • Compliance & Documentation: Ensure all voice services adhere to AF certification, accreditation, and information assurance standards. Maintain strict record-keeping, operational procedures, and network topology maps using MS Visio.

  • Collaboration & Mission Support: Participate in technical interchanges and collaborate effectively with program leads, team members, subcontractors, and high-level subject matter experts.

Required Security & Certifications

  • Clearance: Active DoD Secret Clearance is required.

  • DoD 8570 Compliance: Active CompTIA Security+ certification is required.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or a related field.

    • Substitution: An additional 4 years of direct, relevant voice engineering experience may be substituted for the degree.

  • Experience: 8–12 years of progressive experience in a Unified Communications (UC) role within a defense or federal enterprise environment.

Technical Skills & Competencies

  • Avaya Aura Suite: In-depth, hands-on experience configuring, managing, and troubleshooting Avaya Aura Communication Managers, Session Managers, System Managers, Voice Mail Servers, and Media/Utility Servers.

  • Voice & Security Ecosystems: Advanced experience with Session Border Controllers (SBCs), CAIRS E-911, Sonexis, vIPers, and T-Metrics ACD.

  • Protocols & Telephony Standards: Deep understanding of Telecom standards, including ISDN/T-1, Voice Protection Systems, IPAM (DHCP/DNS), and underlying VoIP protocols such as SIP and H.323.

  • Systems & Operating Environments: Firm working knowledge of databases, Windows Servers, and Linux-based operating systems or appliances.

  • Analytical Skills: Strong network debugging, critical thinking, and problem-isolation capabilities.

Physical & Operational Requirements

  • Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a disciplined approach to technical documentation and process adherence.

  • Teamwork: Highly self-motivated with the ability to work independently or collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team environment.

  • Physical Demands: Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 50+ lbs.

  • Availability: Must be able to support emergency 24/7 operations and occasional weekend work as project milestones or critical system outages warrant.
