Job Description:
Technical Writer

Contract: 6 Months, 6 Month Renewals
Remote
Local Candidates Only
Richmond, VA

POSITION SUMMARY
Seeking a Technical Writer to create and maintain high-quality and comprehensive system documentation, release documents, user manuals, online help content, and training material that comply with standards and meets the intended audience needs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Write and edit various types of technical documentation such as user and procedural manuals, user documentation, tutorials, training material, user guides, online user help, and instructional manuals.
• Edit and proofread technical materials for accuracy and clarity.
• Review and revise documentation for accuracy, consistency, and adherence to style guidelines.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, such as business analysts, software developers, and other stakeholders, to gather necessary information and better understand complex information.
• Organize and structure technical content for end-user consumption, ensuring clarity, easily understandable, and accessibility for the target audience.
• Incorporate visual aids, such as diagrams, screenshots, and illustrations, to enhance the understanding of technical information.
• Ensure documentation complies with industry standard

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• A minimum of four (4) years of experience in technical writing, technical communications, computer science, information technology, or a related field.
• Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field from an accredited institute of higher learning.
• Must be detail oriented.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Excellent verbal and writing communication skills.
• Strong command of grammar, punctuation, and style guides (like APA, MLA, or Chicago).
• Must be able to adapt as you will be working in a dynamic environment with evolving technologies, changing requirements, and distributed team members.
• Must be able to effectively communicate and work with cross-functional teams, such as project managers and project teams, and subject matter experts.
• Must have demonstrated problem-solving skills. Be able to identify and address challenges or obstacles that arise during the documentation process, analyze complex information, anticipate
potential user issues, and resolve these issues through appropriate methods.
• Proven writing experience with FAQs, user guides, or manuals in a technical field.
• Strong knowledge of best technical writing practices, including style guides and industry standards, as well as the technical skills to understand the software development life cycle (SDLC).
• Familiarity with content management systems (CMS) and documentation tools such as Adobe RoboHelp and Microsoft Word as well as technical knowledge of XML markup language and HTML to
define structured content with predefined tags, and conditional tags.
• Work experience with version control systems, such as Git, for managing documentation reviews.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• 6+ years of experience in technical writing.
• Certifications such as those offered by the Society for Technical Communication (STC).
• Proficiency with authoring content using Adobe RoboHelp 2019 Release or greater.
• Experience with Adobe RoboHelp command line builds.
• Experience with HTML5/CSS.
• Experience in writing online help and knowledge base articles.
• Proficiency in using graphics editing software and screen capture tools for creating visuals and illustrations.
• A portfolio of previous work demonstrating writing ability and expertise in technical documentation.
