Job Description:
Senior Network Engineer
6 Month Contract-to-Hire

A dynamic public-sector organization is launching a groundbreaking municipal broadband project and is looking for a seasoned Senior Network Engineer to support the development and operations of a new community-focused Internet Service Provider (ISP). This position plays a vital role in expanding access to reliable, high-speed internet and building the digital foundation for smart infrastructure, public service enhancement, and regional growth.
About the Project
The initiative involves constructing a large-scale fiber optic network complemented by LTE and low-power wide-area wireless technologies. As the network becomes operational, internal teams are being assembled to manage end-to-end ISP services for public entities including safety agencies, educational institutions, and government departments.
Your Role and Responsibilities
As a Senior Network Engineer, you will be instrumental in:
Designing and deploying scalable network infrastructure to support ISP operations.
Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to build and optimize connectivity solutions.
Implementing advanced fiber and wireless technologies to support public service and digital equity objectives.
Managing network systems throughout their lifecycle—from architecture and provisioning to performance and incident management.
Key Duties
Architect and maintain core/access network systems within a public broadband framework.
Optimize transport networks and ensure performance of active hardware and routing elements.
Coordinate with technology partners to implement ISP-grade practices and scalable designs.
Install and configure network devices including routers, firewalls, switches, and wireless platforms.
Perform deep-dive diagnostics and resolution for escalated network issues.
Monitor infrastructure health, respond to alerts, and proactively manage performance.
Lead software maintenance efforts and enforce configuration standards aligned with security protocols.
Document network topology, procedures, and operational standards.
Support training for operations teams on monitoring and basic troubleshooting techniques.
Partner with internal clients to coordinate service planning and activation.
Serve as a project technical lead, directing implementation activities across teams and contractors.
Participate in scheduled maintenance and emergency support rotations.
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated expertise in the design or support of carrier-class or ISP-grade network infrastructures.
Knowledge of community broadband initiatives, including fiber leasing models and last-mile network delivery strategies.
Practical experience with optical networking and Layer 3 technologies, including routing protocols (e.g., BGP, OSPF), VLAN segmentation, DHCP, firewall management, and IP allocation.
Proficiency in using enterprise-grade monitoring and automation platforms such as SolarWinds, NetBox, or Ansible for network observability and configuration management.
Solid understanding of hybrid wireless systems, including CBRS-based LTE and low-power WAN technologies such as LoRaWAN.
Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Network Engineering, or a closely related discipline — or equivalent professional experience.
At least four (4) years of progressive hands-on experience in network engineering, with a minimum of two (2) years involving service provider or enterprise-grade environments.
Possession of a valid driver’s license.
Willingness and ability to participate in after-hours support, including emergency response and rotating on-call duties.
