Senior Data Engineer

Contract-to-Hire

Richmond, VA

Our Life, Annuity, and Long-Term Care team is looking for a Principal Data Engineer to help modernize our data platforms using Databricks. You will lead the creation of data pipelines—from collecting raw data to building complex models—that help our business make better decisions. You will join a high-performing group of 20 people working across four agile teams.

What You Will Do

• Build & Design: Get hands-on with designing, building, and testing data pipelines.

• Set Standards: Create and enforce rules for high-quality coding and engineering, including performing code reviews.

• Innovate: Explore and implement new Databricks features like AI, Machine Learning, and Lakehouse capabilities.

• Optimize: Improve Spark performance and find ways to reduce platform costs.

• Manage Lifecycle: Handle everything from gathering requirements to fixing production issues and monitoring system health.

• Automate: Lead CI/CD efforts and build reusable tests for faster, safer software releases.

What You Need

• Databricks Expertise: 3–5 years of hands-on experience with Databricks.

• Full SDLC Experience: Ability to handle the entire project lifecycle (writing requirements, estimating work, and coding).

• Technical Knowledge: A strong understanding of data warehousing, analytics, and modern engineering.

• Leadership & Communication: Strong skills in mentoring others and explaining technical risks to business leaders.

• Agile Mindset: Experience working in Agile teams and writing clear user stories.

Preferred Skills (Nice to Have)

• Cloud & Industry: Experience with Azure or working within the Insurance/Medical industry.

• Data Modeling: Skill in building specific data structures like SCD2 and surrogate keys.

• Governance: Understanding of data quality and how it fits into pipeline design.

Success Measures

• Modernization: Successfully replacing legacy systems with Databricks to improve business outcomes.

• Stability: Ensuring a secure, stable, and well-documented data environment.

• Growth: Executing a clear technical roadmap that scales with the business.
