Job Description:
We are seeking a senior, hands-on Cloud Systems Engineer to join the Production Operations (ProdOps) Team in Norfolk, VA. This mission-critical role directly impacts global U.S. Navy fleet readiness within a high-stakes, 24/7 environment that is currently undergoing a massive cloud modernization from legacy on-prem infrastructure to AWS GovCloud.
Operating as an individual contributor in an Agile/Scrum environment, you will bring deep, dual-OS engineering expertise (Linux & Windows) alongside heavy VMware virtualization experience. The ProdOps team features a strong veteran presence (70% prior military) and is highly focused on automation, infrastructure-as-code, and continuous improvement.
-
Note: This is a 90% hands-on technical engineering position, not a management role.
Critical Eligibility Criteria (Day-One Requirements)
-
Security Clearance: Active DoD SECRET clearance or higher (Interim clearances cannot be accepted).
-
Cybersecurity Compliance: Current DoD 8570 IAT Level II certification (e.g., Security+) required on day one.
-
Experience: Minimum of 8 years of progressive, hands-on systems administration and engineering experience in enterprise datacenter or tactical environments.
-
Education: Bachelors or Associates degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical field.
-
Dual-OS Engineering: Proven, deep capability engineering both Linux (RHEL/CentOS) and Windows Server environments. (Single-OS candidates will not be considered).
-
Virtualization: Daily, production-level experience administering VMware vSphere, ESXi, and vCenter.
-
Automation: Advanced shell scripting skills (Bash, PowerShell, and/or Python) with the capability to build automation scripts from scratch.
-
Availability: Ability to participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation (approximately 1 week per month) for occasional mission-critical fleet incidents.
Key Responsibilities
-
Vulnerability & Patch Management: Mitigate system vulnerabilities across 100+ distributed servers by installing Information Assurance Vulnerability Alerts (IAVAs). Run monthly ACAS/Nessus security scans and execute technical remediation findings.
-
Virtualization Lifecycle Management: Oversee the full lifecycle of VMs (provisioning, cloning, snapshots, migrations, and performance tuning) across a large-scale VMware vSphere 6.x/7.x and vCenter footprint.
-
Infrastructure Operations: Manage SSL/TLS certificate lifecycles, deploy Data Alignment Packages (DAPs) to tactical systems, and author Requests for Comments (RFCs) for system changes and infrastructure resource allocations.
-
Automation & Scripting: Author custom Bash, PowerShell, or Python scripts to automate repetitive administrative tasks and streamline continuous integration pipelines.
-
Fleet Support & Tier-3 Triage: Act as the escalation point to troubleshoot complex infrastructure and network connectivity issues affecting global fleet operations (ships, submarines, and shore stations), responding rapidly to datacenter outages.
-
Endpoint Compliance: Maintain strict Host Based Security System (HBSS/McAfee/Trellix) compliance across the entire server infrastructure.
Technical Environment
-
Linux/Unix: Expert-level RHEL, CentOS, and Ubuntu management (package management, service management, systemctl, cron, user/group management).
-
Windows Server: Windows Server 2008 through 2019 (Active Directory management, Group Policy Objects, PowerShell, and IIS).
-
Virtualization: VMware vSphere 6.x/7.x, ESXi host configuration, vCenter management, and shared storage optimization.
-
Security Platforms: ACAS/Tenable/Nessus, STIG implementation/validation, HBSS/Trellix, and PKI certificate management.
-
Networking Fundamentals: Deep understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, routing, firewall rules, port management, network troubleshooting tools (ping, traceroute, netstat, tcpdump), and load balancing.
-
Database Operations: Foundational familiarity with relational databases (Sybase highly preferred); ability to perform backup/restore operations and execute basic SQL troubleshooting queries.
Preferred Qualifications & Differentiators
-
Prior Military Service: Strongly preferred, particularly US Navy or US Air Force IT/communications fields (e.g., Navy IT, ET, or Air Force Comm).
-
Domain Knowledge: Prior experience with NTCSS system administration or Navy logistics applications (R-Supply, OOMA, NALCOMIS) is a massive differentiator.
-
Scale Experience: Direct experience managing scaled VMware environments consisting of 100+ hosts and 500+ VMs.
-
Navy Networks: Familiarity with NMCI, ONE-Net, or tactical afloat/ashore network environments.
-
Modern Tools & Cloud: Hands-on experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS / GovCloud), Veeam Backup & Replication, or Citrix Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI).
-
Additional Certifications: Active CompTIA Cloud+, Server+, Network+, CASP+, or INCOSE ASEP certifications.
Location & Work Status
-
Primary Location: Norfolk, VA
-
Shift Profile: Day shift with rotational 24/7 mission-critical on-call support.
